MaxLinear Starts Shipments of Industry’s First Full-Spectrum Capture™ Satellite TV Receiver IC Family

  • MxL5xx family of Full-Spectrum Capture™ Satellite Receiver ICs designed for multi-channel gateways

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- CES – MaxLinear Inc. (NYSE: MXL), a leading provider of integrated radio frequency (RF) and mixed-signal integrated circuits for broadband communications applications, today announced it has started shipping its innovative MxL5xx family of Full-Spectrum Capture™ (FSC™) tuner-demodulators for DVB-S/S2 satellite television systems.

The six SoCs in the MxL5xx family are the first single-chip Full-Spectrum Capture satellite front-end devices on the market that support single or multiple RF inputs, up to a maximum of four. Additionally, these devices integrate from four up to a maximum of eight DVB-S/S2 demodulators, which enables reception and demodulation of an equal number of digital satellite TV channels simultaneously.

The product family includes two single-input RF receivers, the MxL561, and MxL581, which support six and eight channels respectively. The family also includes the MxL582, which not only features two RF inputs and eight channels, but also supports extended L-Band (XL-Band) capability for use with two-cable wide-band low-noise block (LNB) downconverter systems. Lastly, the family includes the MxL544, which supports four RF inputs and has four DVB-S/S2 channels and the MxL584, which supports four RF inputs with eight DVB-S/S2 demodulators.

With the MxL5xx family, MaxLinear provides satellite OEMs a complete range of low power, CMOS-based, high-performance receiver solutions addressing a variety of applications including home media gateways, SAT>IP multiswitches and IP-LNBs.

The MxL5xx devices have a large RF full-spectrum signal capture bandwidth ranging from 1.2-GHz to 4.8-GHz, depending on the RF input configuration. MaxLinear’s Full-Spectrum Capture technology enables each demodulator to receive channels at any frequency within the entire capture bandwidth, enabling true multi-screen user experiences, whole-home multi-channel PVRs and fast-channel change capability. Further, the devices provide spectrum analysis data that operators can use for remote performance monitoring and diagnostics from a remote technical service center.

“The satellite TV industry is in a rapid shift to multi-channel services that provide more selection for consumers. With the MxL5xx product family, we are positioning ourselves to be the market leader in this transition,” said Brian Sprague, MaxLinear’s Vice President and General Manager. “Now that the full product family is generally available, we look forward to engaging new customers and bringing the benefits of our technology to more satellite television customers allowing them to benefit from the multi-screen TV revolution.”

Technical Highlights

The MxL5xx family is based on MaxLinear’s 40 nm digital CMOS technology, which offers exceptional Full-Spectrum Capture and signal reception performance, and low power consumption.

The MxL5xx devices integrate all active front-end components, including low-noise amplifiers (LNAs). Each device supports a configurable transport stream interface compatible with the leading MPEG decoder SoCs. Due to the high levels of system integration, the bill of material (BOM) in end applications is reduced to a minimal number of low-cost passive components, and a crystal, which enables ultra-compact low cost system solutions.

The extremely low power consumption and power control flexibility of the MxL5xx devices provides dramatic system cost reduction, and increased reliability, which helps satellite equipment vendors and operators build compact products compliant with the requirements of Energy Star and the European Code of Conduct for Digital TV Services and Broadband Equipment for both standby and operating modes.

All the devices are available in very small form factor, pin-compatible 10mm x 10mm QFN packages ideally suited for minimizing system manufacturing costs.
