SiliconDust Selects MaxLinear for Next Generation of HDHomeRun® Network-Attached Tuner Products

  • Multi-tuner products enable reception of high-definition local TV channels
  • HDHomeRun TV app supported on variety of home-networked devices including iOS and Android devices, and DLNA-enabled smart TVs, game consoles and media devices

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- 2013 CES International – MaxLinear Inc. (NYSE: MXL), a leading provider of integrated radio frequency (RF) and mixed-signal integrated circuits for broadband communications applications, today announced that Silicondust USA Inc. (SiliconDust), a leading technology company that develops network-attached digital TV devices, has selected the MxL603 global TV tuner for use in its latest generation of ATSC and DVB-T2 HDHomeRun® products.

The HDHomeRun enables consumers to receive live broadcast television and stream it to any device in the home. Through the use of standard Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) technologies, streams are available to numerous hardware and software platforms, ranging from desktop PCs to tablets, smartphones, and smart TVs. The new generation of HDHomeRun products features real-time hardware conversion of video to streaming-friendly H.264 format, enabling devices with limited processing power to play back high-quality video without the need for a PC to perform the conversion.

“The MaxLinear MxL603 tuner was an ideal choice for our HDHomeRun Gen 4 product line,” said Nick Kelsey, CTO of SiliconDust. “The low power, small footprint and excellent RF performance of the MaxLinear tuner allowed us to keep a small form factor while increasing the functionality and performance of the new product line.”

“Our next generation HDHomeRun global product line will support DLNA and hardware transcoding of digital TV signals to any screen in the home network,” said Theodore Head, President and CEO of SiliconDust. “MaxLinear tuners have been an integral part of our designs and will continue to be as we introduce new products globally for over the air, access-controlled cable, and satellite network-attached tuner devices.”

“As the number of TV-capable, network-attached devices in the home explodes, consumers are demanding a more flexible TV experience, where content can be viewed on any device in their home network,” said Brian Sprague, vice president and general manager at MaxLinear. “The HDHomeRun is the simplest way for consumers to watch live television on multiple devices in their home, whether it’s a TV, computer, tablet, mobile phone or gaming device.”

He added: “The breakthrough performance and ultra-low power consumption of the tuner makes the overall solution more compact and cost-effective because it offers superior rejection of a wide range of competing wireless signals without the need for external filters that drive up cost and increase board space.”

Technical Details

Part of the “super radio” family because of its breakthrough in silicon tuner technology, the MxL603 enables a 50 percent reduction in size and power compared to existing solutions, while meeting the exacting requirements of digital television applications. The MxL603 delivers an exceptional noise figure of 3.8 decibels (dB).

The MxL603 is software configurable for digital reception standards without the need for any hardware modifications, allowing manufacturers to design one single front end for all global markets and then to configure the standards support on a per market basis. Supported standards include: DVB-T/T2, ISDB-T, ATSC, ATSC M/H, DTMB and ITU-T J.83 Annex A (DVB-C) / B (US Cable) / C (Japan).

The MxL603 is based on MaxLinear’s 65-nm CMOS advanced radio technology that has been shipping since early 2011. It is available in an ultra-small form factor 4x4 24-pin QFN package.

MaxLinear will display the latest HDHomeRun family of products at CES 2013 in a private suite at the Las Vegas Hotel & Casino (LVH), January 8-11.
