TOT Launches New Gigabit Broadband Access Service Powered by MaxLinear’s G.hn Technology

  • G.hn technology enables Thailand state-owned TOT to leverage existing copper wireline assets to deliver fiber-class broadband service called Super Speed by Giga Wire at a fraction of the cost of a traditional fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) deployment

BANGKOK--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- MaxLinear, Inc. (NYSE:MXL), a leading provider of radio frequency (RF), analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits for the connected home, wired and wireless infrastructure, and industrial and multimarket applications, today announced that TOT Public Company Limited, the largest fixed-line service provider in Thailand, has launched Super Speed by Giga Wire, a new gigabit broadband internet service that is powered by MaxLinear G.hn technology. The new service uses equipment developed by ZARAM Technology, a leading supplier of broadband networking equipment based in South Korea.

G.hn is an ITU-T networking standard that delivers data rates up to 2 Gbps and can operate over a variety of wired media. Multiple service providers today rely on G.hn technology to deliver broadband services to millions of users in Europe, Asia and the Americas.

With a population of more than 69 million people and an increasing penetration rate for fixed broadband access connections, Thailand is a perfect fit for MaxLinear G.hn access technology, which enables service providers to deliver gigabit broadband services without having to replace the telephone lines already available in businesses and in the homes of consumers.

The new Super Speed by Giga Wire broadband service offered by TOT will enable businesses and consumers to enjoy superfast Internet and Wi-Fi service, HD and 4K video, online gaming, cloud storage with high-speed uploads and high-quality video conferencing.

The G.hn solution selected by TOT is composed of two devices:

  • The ZARAM L12224XH G.hn Access Multiplexer (GAM), a 24-port G.hn Wave-2 switch that is installed in each MDU or commercial building and is connected between the optical fiber WAN connection and the telephones wires inside the building.
  • The ZARAM L36104HPW G.hn Network Terminal (GNT), a compact G.hn Wave-2 customer premises equipment that is installed in each subscriber’s home and provides a high-performance Wi-Fi access point and multiple Gigabit Ethernet ports.

The ZARAM G.hn equipment leverages MaxLinear G.hn Wave-2 chips with G.now™ software and VectorBoost™ technology, enabling multiple GAMs to be stacked together and providing options to deploy the service in large apartment buildings with hundreds of subscribers.

“The high cost of bringing optical fiber to each home has been one of the main factors delaying the adoption of high-speed broadband services in many markets. Thanks to the flexibility and robustness provided by G.hn technology, TOT can now offer the fastest broadband service in Thailand, at a much lower cost per user than traditional FTTH deployments,” said Mongkol Prakobtong, Senior Director of Commercial and Real Estate Sales Group at TOT. “Based on our experience during field trials, we are really impressed with the support provided by ZARAM engineers, and the excellent performance delivered by their equipment even under the challenging crosstalk and noise conditions found in some of the older apartment buildings.”

“The fact that TOT has selected broadband access equipment powered by MaxLinear G.hn technology is further confirmation of the capabilities of our G.hn products, which are being increasingly adopted by tier-1 carriers in Asia, Europe and North America to help them deliver gigabit broadband services to millions of users,” said Will Torgerson, Vice President and General Manager of the Broadband Group at MaxLinear.

“Our G.hn broadband access equipment is currently being deployed by service providers in North America, South Korea and other regions. When we started working on adapting it to meet the specific needs of TOT, we knew we could rely on the robustness of MaxLinear’s G.hn implementation and its flexibility to adapt to different network topologies,” said Joon Hyun Baek, CEO of ZARAM. “We are really excited to have the chance to work with TOT to bring high-speed broadband service to their millions of users, both in urban and rural areas.”

The first commercial users of the new Super Speed by Giga Wire service are businesses located in several malls in Bangkok including Siam Center in Bangkok, Siam Paragon and Platinum Fashion Mall in Bangkok. The first residential users are located in a Supalai Condominium at Kaset Navamin. TOT plans to extend the service to the entire country starting in 2Q 2018.
