MaxLinear Debuts MxL600 “Super Radio” Family of High Performance 65-nm CMOS Tuners for Next-Generation Flat Panel TV, Set Top Box and Automotive Applications

MxL600 family sets a new benchmark for overall reception performance, silicon integration and power consumption

CARLSBAD, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- MaxLinear Inc. (NYSE: MXL), a leading provider of integrated radio frequency (RF) and mixed-signal integrated circuits for broadband communication applications, announced today the MxL600 tuner family which the company has dubbed the “super radio” for its high performance.

The product family is currently composed of three distinct devices. The MxL601 is targeted at the global hybrid analog and digital TV tuner applications. The MxL602 is targeted at applications that require only digital demodulation such as digital set top boxes. And the MxL605 is targeted at automotive applications requiring an increased operating temperature range.

MaxLinear's MxL601 65-nm hybrid tuner IC is sampling now. Mass production is scheduled to start in December 2011.

The MxL600 family establishes breakthroughs in both size and power dissipation enabling as much as 50% board area and power consumption reduction compared to existing solutions. All devices are housed in an ultra small 4 mm x 4 mm QFN package. The device supports configurable power modes for optimized standard-specific performance. Power consumption is only 300mW in typical applications.

Specifically optimized for TV applications, the MxL601 delivers exceptional performance for all global analog and digital, cable and terrestrial television reception standards. With the growing trend of integration of discrete analog TV demodulators into backend TV SoCs, MxL601 will be able to directly interface to all major backend TV SoCs across the full range of TV market segments.

“The MxL600 product family is a game changer. We think these are the best tuners on the market,” said Yves Rasse, Sr. Director of MaxLinear Consumer Product Line. “They define a new class of high performance monolithic CMOS tuners that provide exceptional value in all TV and STB market segments. It is a privilege to collaborate with our initial MxL600 customers and to contribute to the success of their next-generation tuner frontends.”

All MxL600 tuner devices are software configurable for global reception standards without the need for any hardware modifications, allowing manufacturers to design one single front end for all global markets and then to configure the standards support on a per market basis. Supported standards include: PAL, SECAM, NTSC, DVB-T/T2, ISDB-T, ISDB-Tmm, ATSC, ATSC M/H, DTMB, ITU-T J.83 Annex A [DVB-C] / B [US Cable] / C [Japan]; DOCSIS and EURODOCSIS.
